All Connection Methods for Fiber Optic Cold Connectors

Page Content

Fiber optic cold connectors, also known as fast connectors, can be connected using mechanical splicing techniques that are quick, reusable, and require minimal specialized equipment.

Methods of Cold Connection

  1. Mechanical (Cold) Splicing Cold splicing involves aligning two fiber ends in a mechanical sleeve or connector without heat. The fibers are held in place using a clamp or gel, allowing light to pass through with minimal loss. Typical attenuation ranges from 0.1 to 0.3 dB per connection, making it suitable for temporary or emergency connections .
  2. Fast Connectors Fast connectors are pre-assembled cold connectors that use a mechanical splice inside the connector. Installation steps include:
    • Fiber Stripping: Remove the protective coating using a fiber stripping tool, exposing the bare fiber.
    • Fiber Cleaving: Cut the fiber cleanly with a calibrated fiber cleaver to ensure a smooth end face.
    • Splicing: Insert the fiber into the fast connector, where the pre-installed mechanical splice aligns the fibers.
    • Inspection and Testing: Verify the connection using an optical power meter or visual fault locator to ensure proper light transmission .
  3. Emergency or Temporary Cold Splicing This method uses mechanical and sometimes chemical bonding to quickly join fibers. It is ideal for short-term or emergency repairs. The connection can be completed in minutes by trained personnel, but it may become unstable over time, so it is not recommended for permanent installations .

Advantages of Cold Connectors

  • Quick Installation: Connections can be made in minutes without curing or polishing.
  • Reusability: Unlike fusion splicing, cold connectors can be disconnected and reused.
  • Minimal Equipment: Only basic tools like fiber strippers, cleavers, and inspection meters are needed.
  • Flexibility: Suitable for field repairs, temporary setups, or high-density environments where rapid deployment is required .

Considerations

  • Attenuation: Cold connections generally have higher light loss than fusion splices.
  • Durability: Mechanical connections may degrade over time, especially in harsh environments.
  • Fiber Type Compatibility: Ensure the connector matches the fiber type (singlemode or multimode) to maintain performance . By following proper preparation, cleaving, alignment, and testing procedures, fiber optic cold connectors provide a reliable and efficient solution for temporary or rapid fiber connections.
