Splicing ensures minimal signal loss (attenuation) and back reflection, making it the preferred method for permanent installations compared to connectors, which are better suited for flexible terminations at patch panels or equipment ports .

  5. Protect the Splice: Slide a heat-shrink sleeve over the splice and cure it in a heat oven to provide mechanical protection and environmental sealing.
  6. Test the Connection: Use a visual fault locator (VFL) or optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR) to verify low loss and proper alignment .

2. Mechanical Splicing

Mechanical splicing aligns the fiber ends inside a sleeve or housing without melting them together. It is faster and requires less equipment but generally results in higher signal loss. Mechanical splices are suitable for temporary repairs or situations where fusion splicing is impractical . Steps for Mechanical Splicing:

  1. Prepare and Clean the Fiber: Strip, clean, and cleave the fiber ends as with fusion splicing.
  2. Insert into Splice Sleeve: Place the fibers into a mechanical splice holder, which aligns the cores precisely.
  3. Secure the Splice: Lock the fibers in place using the sleeve's internal gel or adhesive to maintain alignment.
  4. Protect the Splice: Cover with a protective sleeve or enclosure to prevent damage.
  5. Test the Connection: Verify the splice using a VFL or OTDR to ensure acceptable signal transmission .
