Fiber optic cables carry information by sending pulses of light through ultra-thin strands of glass or plastic called optical fibers. These light pulses represent digital data, with the presence of light typically encoding a "1" and the absence of light encoding a "0" . Unlike copper cables, which rely on voltage or current to transmit electrical signals, the fiber itself does not conduct electricity . The system does, however, involve electrical components. At the transmitting end, a laser diode or LED converts an electrical signal into light. The input to the transmitter is usually a low-voltage electrical signal, which is then converted into a current pulse to drive the light source . At the receiving end, a photodetector captures the light and converts it back into an electrical current, which is then processed into a voltage signal compatible with connected electronics . This separation of the transmission medium (light) from the electrical signal allows fiber optics to offer higher bandwidth, longer transmission distances, and immunity to electromagnetic interference compared to traditional copper wiring . While the fiber itself does not carry voltage or current, the supporting devices—transmitters, receivers, and amplifiers—require electricity to function, meaning the overall system depends on electrical power even though the data travels as light . In summary, fiber optic cables use light for data transmission, not voltage or current, but the electronics that generate and detect the light rely on electrical signals to operate.
