Splicing sequence of four-core optical fiber cable

Splicing sequence of four-core optical fiber cable

Page Content

The standard color sequence for a 4-core optical fiber cable follows TIA/EIA-598-C: Blue, Orange, Green, Brown.

Fiber Color Coding

For a 4-core optical fiber cable, each fiber is color-coded to ensure proper identification during splicing and termination. According to the TIA/EIA-598-C standard, the first four fibers in any cable are assigned the following colors:

  1. Blue
  2. Orange
  3. Green
  4. Brown This sequence is consistent for both single-mode and multimode fibers and is used in loose-tube or tight-buffered cable constructions. In loose-tube cables, the tube itself may be colored (commonly blue or white), while the fibers inside follow the Blue/Orange/Green/Brown order .

Splicing and Polarity Considerations

When splicing 4-core cables, maintaining polarity is critical to ensure that transmitters and receivers are correctly aligned. The ANSI/TIA-568.3-E standard specifies two main methods for duplex systems:

  • Consecutive-Fiber Positioning: Fibers are connected in the same consecutive order on both ends (1→2→3→4). This is often used when adapters are installed in opposite orientations to maintain proper polarity.
  • Reverse-Pair Positioning: Fibers are connected in reverse order on one end (1→2→3→4 on one end, 2→1→4→3 on the other) to maintain duplex signal alignment . For a 4-core cable, the most common configuration is to use two fibers for a duplex link (one for transmit, one for receive) and the remaining two as backup or redundancy fibers .

Best Practices for Splicing

  • Fusion Splicing is preferred for permanent connections, providing low insertion loss (typically 0.1 dB for single-mode fibers) and high reliability .
  • Mechanical Splicing can be used for temporary or emergency connections but generally has higher loss.
  • Always clean and cleave fibers properly before splicing to minimize signal loss.
  • Label fibers clearly according to the color code to avoid confusion during maintenance or future expansions. By following the Blue, Orange, Green, Brown sequence and adhering to proper polarity methods, technicians can ensure accurate, low-loss splicing for 4-core optical fiber cables.
