Photosensitive switch in distribution box

Photosensitive switch in distribution box

Page Content

A photosensitive switch automatically controls lighting circuits in a distribution box based on ambient light levels, turning lights on at dusk and off at dawn.

Function and Principle

A photosensitive switch, also called a photocell switch or light-sensitive switch, uses a light-dependent resistor (LDR) or a photoelectric sensor to detect ambient light . The resistance of the sensor changes with light intensity: in darkness, resistance is high, allowing current to flow and activating the connected lighting; in daylight, resistance drops, cutting off the current and turning off the lights . This automatic operation ensures energy-efficient lighting control without manual intervention.

Components and Wiring

Typical components include the sensor, control circuit, relay, and load connection . In a distribution box setup:

  • Power source: Connects to the switch and the load (lighting circuit).
  • Load: The lighting or electrical device controlled by the switch.
  • Sensor wiring: Usually three wires—live from the power source, live to the load, and neutral connected to both source and load .

Some switches allow remote photocell units to be mounted up to 50 meters away from the distribution box, providing flexibility in sensor placement . Many models include built-in time delays to prevent unnecessary switching due to transient light changes, such as passing car headlights .

Types and Features

  • Standard LDR-based switches: Simple on/off operation at preset light thresholds.
  • Programmable versions: Allow adjustment of light sensitivity, time delays, and integration with time clocks for more precise control .
  • Photocell materials: Cadmium sulfide (CdS) for high sensitivity, silicon for solar applications, and other semiconductors for specialized uses .

Installation Considerations

  • Ensure the switch is installed in a dry, dust-free location and shielded from artificial light sources that could affect operation .
  • Turn off the circuit breaker before wiring to ensure safety .
  • Verify voltage compatibility with the distribution system.
  • For complex or code-compliant installations, consult a qualified electrician .

Applications

Photosensitive switches in distribution boxes are commonly used for:

  • Street lighting and outdoor security lights
  • Shop windows and display lighting
  • Public signals and automated lighting circuits
  • Energy-saving automation in residential or commercial buildings .

By integrating a photosensitive switch, lighting systems operate efficiently, reduce energy consumption, and provide consistent illumination without manual control.
