Installation of European Low-Voltage Explosion-Proof Distribution Boxes

Installation of European Low-Voltage Explosion-Proof Distribution Boxes

Page Content

Proper installation of European low-voltage explosion-proof distribution boxes requires careful inspection, precise alignment, secure mounting, and adherence to ATEX/IECEx standards to ensure safety in hazardous areas.

Pre-Installation Preparation

Before installation, ensure the control room or installation site is clean, safe, and fully prepared, with all interior work completed. Inspect the distribution boxes upon arrival for deformations, paint damage, completeness of instruments, accessories, and manuals, and document any discrepancies to prevent future issues .

Positioning and Alignment

  • Place the boxes on the foundation steel according to the layout plan.
  • Align the ends first, then use a line at two-thirds height from the bottom to ensure uniform alignment.
  • Adjust with 0.5mm shims, using a maximum of three per spot.
  • Ensure the top level difference between neighboring boxes does not exceed 2mm, with overall differences within 5mm, and gaps between boxes no more than 2mm .

Mounting and Securing

  • Fix the boxes using bolts through pre-drilled holes and connect side panels with galvanized screws.
  • Weld high and low voltage switchboxes to the reserved angle steels for additional stability.
  • Cover the visible cable layer with checkered steel plates and insulate both front and rear with 1200mm x 10mm insulation .

Electrical Connections

  • Use certified terminals and junction boxes suitable for hazardous areas (Ex e, Ex d, or Ex p) to safely conduct and distribute energy .
  • Ensure all wiring complies with ATEX or IECEx standards, maintaining proper separation and grounding to prevent sparks or arc flash incidents .
  • Modular systems, such as BARTEC's EXboardTM or ABB's low-voltage explosion-protective components, allow for flexible integration, remote operation, and maintenance while ensuring compliance with safety regulations .

Post-Installation Checks

  • Verify mechanical alignment, leveling, and secure fastening of all boxes.
  • Confirm that all electrical connections are tight, insulated, and correctly labeled.
  • Conduct a functional test to ensure proper operation of the distribution system before energizing.
  • Maintain documentation for inspection, maintenance, and regulatory compliance .

Safety and Compliance

  • Only trained personnel should perform installation in hazardous areas.
  • Follow manufacturer guidelines and local regulations for ATEX/IECEx compliance.
  • Consider arc flash protection strategies and ensure that all components are rated for the specific zone classification of the installation site . By following these steps, European low-voltage explosion-proof distribution boxes can be installed safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with international standards, ensuring reliable operation in hazardous environments.
