Fiber Numbering and Color Coding

Fiber optic cables are typically numbered using color codes defined by the TIA-598-C standard. For cables with up to 12 fibers, each fiber is assigned a unique color in the following sequence: Blue, Orange, Green, Brown, Slate, White, Red, Black, Yellow, Violet, Rose, Aqua . This color sequence allows technicians to quickly identify fibers during termination and splicing. For high-count cables (more than 12 fibers, e.g., 48, 96, or 144 fibers), a “Tube and Fiber” system is used. The 12-color sequence is applied first to the outer buffer tube, then repeated for the individual fibers inside the tube. For example, Fiber #34 in a 48-fiber cable would be the 10th fiber (Violet) in the 3rd tube (Green) .

Special Numbering for MPO and Ribbon Cables

For 16-fiber MPO connectors, a 16-color sequence is often used: 13: Olive, 14: Magenta, 15: Tan, 16: Lime. This sequence is common in European standards (DIN) and high-density ribbon cables . Multi-fiber connectors and ribbon cables may also use composite ferrules to hold multiple fibers, with numbering corresponding to the fiber positions within the ferrule.

Practical Considerations

  • Singlemode vs. Multimode: Singlemode fibers are more sensitive to termination errors and require careful splicing or factory-made pigtails, while multimode fibers are easier to terminate directly in the field .
  • Connector Types: LC, SC, ST, MPO, and other connectors may have different ferrule arrangements, but numbering always follows the color-coded sequence to maintain consistency .
  • Documentation: Accurate labeling and numbering are critical for network management, troubleshooting, and future expansions. Each fiber should be clearly marked at both ends of the cable.
