Wiring of Optical Distribution Box

Wiring of Optical Distribution Box

Page Content

The wiring process of an optical distribution box involves mounting the box, introducing and securing fiber optic cables, routing fibers to adapters or splice trays, and testing connections while maintaining proper bend radius and labeling.

Step 1: Preparation and Mounting

Before wiring, select a suitable installation location that is dry, ventilated, and free from water leakage or high-voltage interference. Indoor boxes should be mounted at 1.2–2.5 meters above the ground, while outdoor boxes are typically 2.8–3.2 meters high . Ensure the wall or rack is stable and capable of supporting the box. Use expansion bolts or brackets to secure the box horizontally and vertically, keeping deviations within 3mm .

Step 2: Introducing Fiber Optic Cables

Insert the optical cable through the designated entry hole using a protective grommet or cable jacket to prevent damage . Wrap the cable at the fixed point with tape or use cable ties to secure it. Pre-terminated branch fiber jumpers or pigtails are commonly used for easier connection to adapter panels . Ensure the cable length allows the front panel to be fully extended without tension, typically at least 31 inches for the main trunk .

Step 3: Routing and Termination

Inside the box, route the fiber cables carefully to avoid exceeding the minimum bend radius. Use cable ties or movable clips to secure the main trunk, while individual branch fibers may remain free . Connect each fiber to the corresponding port on the adapter panel or splice tray, ensuring one-to-one correspondence. Bend radius control clips help maintain proper curvature and prevent signal loss . For fusion splicing, route fibers to the splice module and terminate connectors at the adapter panel for patching .

Step 4: Identification and Documentation

Label all fibers and ports clearly, including core numbers, cable type, and direction of signal flow. Record this information on paper forms or in the box's card slot for future maintenance . Proper labeling prevents confusion during troubleshooting or network expansion.

Step 5: Grounding and Safety

For boxes connected to power or metal shielding, use protective ground cables to prevent electromagnetic interference or lightning hazards. Ensure the reinforced core and metal shielding layers are properly grounded .

Step 6: Testing and Verification

After wiring, inspect all connections for damage or excessive bending. Test the optical performance using tools like an OTDR to verify signal integrity and ensure the installation meets design specifications . Follow manufacturer guidelines strictly to maintain cable performance and longevity.

Precautions

  • Avoid excessive bending, pulling, or crushing of fibers.
  • Maintain proper bend radius throughout routing.
  • Ensure sufficient slack for future maintenance.
  • Follow cable manufacturer instructions to prevent signal loss . By following these steps, the optical distribution box will provide organized, protected, and efficient fiber management, supporting high-density network deployments and reliable connectivity.
