24-core multimode optical cable color chart

24-core multimode optical cable color chart

Page Content

A 24-core multimode fiber optic cable uses two 12-color sequences, with each fiber uniquely identified by its tube color and fiber color according to TIA-598-C standards.

Color Coding Overview

Multimode fiber cables follow the TIA-598-C/D standard, which defines a 12-color sequence for individual fibers:

  1. Blue
  2. Orange
  3. Green
  4. Brown
  5. Slate (Gray)
  6. White
  7. Red
  8. Black
  9. Yellow
  10. Violet
  11. Rose
  12. Aqua For a 24-fiber cable, the fibers are grouped into two buffer tubes, each containing 12 fibers. The tube color identifies the group, and the fiber color identifies the position within the tube.

Tube and Fiber Assignment for 24 Fibers

Tube NumberTube ColorFiber Positions (1–12)Fiber Colors
1Blue1–12Blue, Orange, Green, Brown, Slate, White, Red, Black, Yellow, Violet, Rose, Aqua
2Orange13–24Blue, Orange, Green, Brown, Slate, White, Red, Black, Yellow, Violet, Rose, Aqua

How to identify a specific fiber:

  • Fiber #1–12: Located in the Blue tube, fiber color corresponds directly to the 12-color sequence.
  • Fiber #13–24: Located in the Orange tube, fiber color repeats the 12-color sequence. For example, Fiber #13 is Blue in the Orange tube, Fiber #14 is Orange in the Orange tube, and so on.

Practical Notes

  • Outer Jacket Color: Multimode cables are typically orange (OM1/OM2) or aqua (OM3/OM4/OM5) to indicate fiber type.
  • Connector/Boot Color: Multimode connectors usually have beige, black, or aqua boots, depending on the fiber type and polish.
  • Repeating Sequence: For cables exceeding 12 fibers, the 12-color sequence repeats in each tube, and tube colors are assigned sequentially to maintain unique identification.
  • Installation Tip: Always verify fiber numbers visually using the tube and fiber color combination to avoid misconnection or signal loss. This system ensures that each fiber in a 24-core multimode cable is uniquely identifiable, simplifying splicing, patching, and maintenance in high-density installations (TIA-598-C/D) .
