FC switch fiber optic

Page Content

An FC fiber optic switch can refer to either a Fibre Channel switch for SANs or a MEMS/prism-based optical switch for routing light in fiber networks.

Fibre Channel (FC) Switch for SANs

A Fibre Channel switch is a network switch compatible with the Fibre Channel protocol, primarily used to create a Fibre Channel fabric, which is the backbone of a Storage Area Network (SAN) . It enables many-to-many communication between servers and storage devices, supports device name lookup, security, redundancy, and implements zoning to control traffic between nodes. FC switches can be deployed individually or in multi-switch configurations, connected via fiber optic cables. Major manufacturers include Brocade (Broadcom), Cisco, and QLogic (Marvell) .

High-performance models, such as the Cisco MDS 9124V, provide 64-Gbps connectivity, automatic zoning, nonblocking forwarding, NVMe/FC readiness, and advanced diagnostics like Inter-Switch Link (ISL) and HBA diagnostics . These switches are suitable for small to large-scale SANs, offering high bandwidth, low latency, and scalability for cloud-scale applications.

MEMS and Prism-Based Fiber-Optic Switches

MEMS fiber-optic switches use micro-electromechanical systems to redirect light between fibers. They are highly reliable, durable (up to 3 billion cycles), and available in multiple wavelength ranges (480–1625 nm). MEMS switches are non-latching, can be mounted on PCBs, and are offered with FC/PC or FC/APC connectors . They are commonly used in optical systems, OEM components, and evaluation boards.

Prism-based fiber-optic switches use moving prisms between fixed collimators to enable bi-directional switching. They provide low insertion loss (<1 dB), low back reflection (<-55 dB), and high durability (>10 million cycles). These switches are used for optical signal routing, bypassing nodes in fiber ring networks, and automated fiber testing. They also support FC/UPC or FC/APC connectors and can be integrated into compact modules or PCB-mounted systems .

Conclusion

An FC fiber optic switch can either be a Fibre Channel switch for SANs, providing high-speed, low-latency connectivity for storage networks, or a MEMS/prism-based optical switch, used to route light in fiber-optic systems. Selection depends on whether the application is data storage networking or optical signal management. Both types often use FC connectors for fiber interfacing, but their functions, protocols, and performance characteristics differ significantly .
