Communication cable and optical cable models

Page Content

Communication cables include traditional copper cables and fiber optic cables, with optical cables categorized by core type, structure, reinforcement, and protective layers.

Types of Optical Cables

1. Singlemode Optical Fiber Singlemode cables have a small core diameter (~8–9 microns) and support long-distance, high-speed transmission, often exceeding 50 kilometers. They are ideal for data centers, enterprise networks, and fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) applications due to minimal signal loss and high bandwidth capacity . 2. Multimode Optical Fiber Multimode cables feature larger cores (50–62.5 microns) and are suitable for shorter distances, typically 550 meters to 2 kilometers. They are commonly used in local area networks (LANs), data centers, and short-range communications . 3. Indoor Optical Fiber Designed for indoor environments, these cables are lightweight, flexible, and resistant to bending. They are suitable for homes, offices, and hotels, and include indoor singlemode, multimode, and unshielded variants . 4. Outdoor and Special-Purpose Cables Outdoor cables are built to withstand environmental stress, including UV exposure, moisture, and temperature variations. Special-purpose cables include submarine cables, armored cables, and self-supporting aerial cables .

Optical Cable Model Codes

Optical cables are often identified by standardized codes indicating their type, reinforcement, structure, and protective layers:

  • Classification Code: GY (outdoor), GR (soft), GJ (office), GS (equipment), GH (submarine), GT (special)
  • Reinforcement Member: No symbol (metal), F (non-metallic), G (metal heavy-duty), H (non-metallic heavy-duty)
  • Derived Feature: D (fiber ribbon), B (flat), T (filled), G (skeleton groove), Z (self-supporting)
  • Protective Layer: Y (polyethylene), V (PVC), U (polyurethane), A (aluminum-polyethylene), L (aluminum), G (steel), Q (lead), S (steel-aluminum-polyethylene)
  • Outer Sheath: Numeric codes indicate armor or sleeve type For example, GYGZL03 represents an outdoor optical cable (GY) with metal heavy-duty reinforcement (G), self-supporting structure (Z), aluminum sheath (L), and polyethylene sleeve without armor (03), .

Key Components of Fiber Optic Cables

  • Fiber Core: Central part transmitting light signals
  • Cladding: Surrounds the core, reflecting light back inside
  • Buffer Coating: Protects the core and improves handling
  • Outer Jacket: Provides environmental protection and identification
  • Light Source: Laser or LED generates the optical signal

Comparison with Traditional Communication Cables

Unlike copper cables that transmit electrical signals, fiber optic cables transmit data as light, offering higher bandwidth, longer transmission distances, and immunity to electromagnetic interference. Copper cables remain in use for short-range or cost-sensitive applications, but fiber optics dominate high-speed, long-distance communication networks .

Applications

  • Singlemode: Long-haul networks, FTTH, enterprise backbones
  • Multimode: LANs, data centers, short-distance links
  • Indoor Cables: Office wiring, residential installations
  • Outdoor/Armored Cables: Submarine links, aerial installations, industrial environments Understanding these models and specifications helps engineers select the right cable for performance, distance, and environmental requirements.
