Wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) is used to increase the capacity of optical fiber networks by transmitting multiple data streams simultaneously over a single fiber, each on a different wavelength of light.

Purpose of WDM

WDM allows multiple optical signals to travel through a single fiber without interference, effectively multiplying the fiber's capacity and making more efficient use of existing infrastructure . Each wavelength, or channel, carries an independent data stream, enabling high aggregate bandwidths that can reach terabits per second when multiple channels are combined . This is particularly useful in overcoming limitations of electronic speeds and optical dispersion in long-distance communications .

Types of WDM

  • Coarse WDM (CWDM): Uses fewer channels with wider spacing, suitable for short-distance or metropolitan networks. It is cost-effective and simpler to implement .
  • Dense WDM (DWDM): Uses many closely spaced channels, ideal for high-capacity, long-haul networks such as Internet backbones. DWDM supports very high data rates and allows flexible network upgrades .

Applications

WDM is widely used in:

  • Long-haul telecommunications: To transmit large volumes of data over continental or intercontinental distances .
  • Metro and access networks: For connecting cities or campuses efficiently without laying additional fiber .
  • Data centers and enterprise networks: To maximize bandwidth and reduce latency between multiple sites .
  • Network upgrades: WDM enables cost-effective expansion of existing fiber infrastructure by adding new channels without installing new fibers .

How It Works

A multiplexer (MUX) combines multiple wavelengths at the transmitter, and a demultiplexer (DEMUX) separates them at the receiver. Optical amplifiers can boost signals over long distances, and optical add-drop multiplexers allow selective insertion or removal of channels without disrupting others . This makes WDM a flexible and scalable solution for modern high-capacity optical networks.
