Preparation

  1. Clean Environment: Work in a dust-free, clean room to prevent contamination of the fiber end face and polishing films .
  2. Tools Needed: Polishing machine, polishing jig/puck, polishing films/discs of varying grit sizes (e.g., 30 µm → 9 µm → 3 µm → 1 µm → final 0.01 µm), distilled water or polishing fluid, fiber cutter, and microscope for inspection .
  3. Connector Type: Identify the connector type (SC, LC, FC, ST, APC, UPC) as each requires specific polishing parameters and end-face geometry .

Polishing Process

  1. Fiber Cleaving: After stripping and inserting the fiber into the ferrule, use a fiber cutter to align and gently break the fiber to the correct length .
  2. Mounting: Place the connector in the polishing jig/puck and secure it on the polishing machine. Ensure the ferrule is properly exposed and aligned .
  3. Polishing Settings: Adjust the machine's pressure, speed, and time according to the connector type. Incorrect settings can damage the polishing film or create scratches .
  4. Sequential Polishing:
    • Start with coarse grit (e.g., 30 µm) to remove excess epoxy and shape the fiber.
    • Progressively use finer grits (9 µm → 3 µm → 1 µm) to smooth the surface.
    • Finish with ultra-fine polishing film (0.01 µm) for a mirror-like finish .
    • Use distilled water or polishing fluid on the film and polish in a figure-eight motion to avoid uneven surfaces .
  5. APC Polishing: For APC connectors, ensure the 8° angled end face is correctly formed; repeat polishing if the angle is not accurate .

Inspection and Cleaning

  1. Microscope Check: Use a 200X–400X optical fiber microscope to inspect the end face for scratches, dirt, or defects .
  2. Cleaning: After each polishing step, clean the ferrule and polishing film with distilled water or an ultrasonic cleaner to remove debris .
  3. Drying: Use an air gun to remove remaining moisture before proceeding to the next polishing stage .

Precautions

  • Never mix connector types (e.g., APC with UPC) as this can degrade performance .
  • Adjust all machine parameters before starting to prevent damage to the fiber or film .
  • In case of emergency, use the machine's emergency stop and reset properly .
  • Keep polishing films, jigs, and pads clean and dry to maintain consistent results . Following these steps ensures low insertion loss, high return loss, and long-term reliability of fiber optic patch cords. Proper sequential use of grinding discs and careful inspection are critical for achieving high-quality optical connections.
