Primary protection acts as the first line of defense in a power system, while secondary (backup) protection operates if the primary fails or is unavailable.

Primary Protection

Primary protection is the main protective scheme designed to quickly and selectively isolate faults within a specific zone of the power system, such as a line, transformer, or generator . Key characteristics include:

  • Fast operation: It clears faults as quickly as possible to minimize damage and maintain system stability .
  • High sensitivity: The relay settings are optimized to detect faults within the protected zone without affecting adjacent zones .
  • Coordination: Primary relays are coordinated with backup relays to ensure they operate first, preventing unnecessary tripping of other parts of the system .
  • Components: It relies on current and voltage signals from CTs (current transformers) and PTs (potential transformers), and a DC tripping voltage to operate the circuit breaker . Primary protection may fail due to relay malfunction, loss of DC tripping voltage, circuit breaker failure, or wiring issues .

Secondary (Backup) Protection

Secondary or backup protection is designed to operate when the primary protection fails or is temporarily out of service, ensuring continued system reliability . Key features include:

  • Independence: The secondary protection system is independent of the primary, with separate current and voltage inputs, power supply, and output to the breaker .
  • Time delay: Backup relays are set with a longer operating time than primary relays to allow the primary protection to act first .
  • Versatility: It can act as primary protection during maintenance or testing of the main protection system .
  • Types of backup protection:
    • Relay backup: A single circuit breaker is used for both primary and backup relays.
    • Breaker backup: Separate breakers are used for primary and backup protection at the same station.
    • Remote backup: Backup protection is provided by a breaker at a different station .

Coordination and Importance

The coordination between primary and secondary protection ensures that faults are cleared efficiently without unnecessary disruption to the rest of the system. While primary protection handles most faults, secondary protection provides a safety net to prevent equipment damage and maintain system stability in case of primary failure . In summary, primary protection is fast and sensitive, acting as the first line of defense, whereas secondary protection is slower, independent, and ensures reliability by covering failures of the primary system. Proper design and coordination of both circuits are essential for a stable and secure power system .
