A standard PoE switch (IEEE 802.3af) delivers both data and up to 15.4W of power per port over a single Ethernet cable, enabling devices like IP phones, cameras, and access points to operate without separate power sources.

Overview of PoE Switches

A PoE switch is a network switch that can supply electrical power along with data over the same Ethernet cable to connected devices, known as Powered Devices (PDs), such as IP cameras, VoIP phones, wireless access points, and small sensors . The switch itself acts as the Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE), managing both data transmission and power delivery safely .

PoE Standards

PoE switches follow IEEE standards that define the maximum power per port and compatibility with devices:

  • IEEE 802.3af (Standard PoE): Introduced in 2003, provides up to 15.4W per port, with 12.95W guaranteed at the device. Suitable for low-power devices like VoIP phones and simple sensors .
  • IEEE 802.3at (PoE+): Provides up to 30W per port (25.5W at the device), supporting higher-power devices such as PTZ cameras, Wi-Fi 6 access points, and video phones .
  • IEEE 802.3bt (PoE++ / 4PPoE): Uses all four pairs of Ethernet cables to deliver up to 60–90W per port, enough to power monitors, thin clients, or even entire workstations .

How PoE Works

PoE switches perform a three-step negotiation before supplying power to ensure safety:

  1. Detection: The switch applies a small voltage to detect if the connected device is PoE-compatible.
  2. Classification: Determines the device's power class to allocate the correct amount of power.
  3. Power-up: Delivers full power, adjusting dynamically for PoE+ and PoE++ devices using protocols like LLDP . This prevents damage to non-PoE devices and ensures efficient power distribution.

Benefits of Using a PoE Switch

  • Simplified installation: Only one cable is needed for both data and power, eliminating the need for nearby electrical outlets .
  • Centralized power management: Devices can be powered through a UPS connected to the switch, maintaining operation during outages .
  • Reduced costs and space: No need for separate power adapters or additional cabling .
  • Flexibility: Devices can be placed wherever network cables reach, such as ceiling-mounted access points or wall cameras .

Practical Considerations

  • Cable type: Cat5e or higher is recommended for standard PoE; Cat6 or Cat6a may be needed for higher-power PoE++ devices .
  • Distance limit: Standard Ethernet limits PoE to 100 meters (328 feet) per cable run .
  • Device compatibility: Ensure the switch's power budget matches the total requirements of all connected devices. In summary, a standard PoE switch (802.3af) is ideal for powering low-power network devices efficiently while simplifying installation and centralizing power management. For higher-power devices, PoE+ or PoE++ switches are recommended.
