  2. Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR): For longer or buried cables, an OTDR sends light pulses and measures reflections to pinpoint breaks with meter-level accuracy. It can also distinguish between breaks and bends .
  3. Power Meter Testing: Measure signal strength; a significant drop indicates a potential break .
  4. Physical Inspection: Check for visible cuts, kinks, or crushed sections if the cable is accessible .

Preparing for Repair

  • Safety First: Wear gloves, eye protection, and a mask to avoid injury from tiny glass shards .
  • Expose the Fiber: Carefully strip the protective layers using a fiber optic stripper to access the glass core .
  • Clean and Cleave: Wipe the fiber with alcohol and use a high-precision cleaver to create smooth, perpendicular ends for splicing .

Repair Methods

  1. Fusion Splicing: The preferred method for minimal signal loss (<0.1 dB). Fibers are welded together using an electric arc. After splicing, protect the joint with a heat-shrink sleeve or splice protection sleeve .

Post-Repair Testing

  • OTDR Verification: Test the repaired section to ensure continuity and acceptable signal loss .
  • Maintain Proper Bend Radius: Avoid sharp bends in trays or conduits to prevent future breaks .
  • Secure and Protect: Rebury outdoor cables or secure indoor cables in trays to prevent mechanical stress .

Preventive Measures

  • Use high-quality conduits or armored cables to protect fibers from external forces .
  • Avoid exceeding the cable's minimum bend radius and maximum pull tension during installation .
