A fiber optic communication switch is a device that selectively routes optical signals between fibers, enabling flexible, high-speed, and low-loss optical network management.

Overview

A fiber optic switch controls the path of light in fiber optic networks, allowing optical signals to be switched from one fiber to another without converting them to electrical signals, which preserves high bandwidth and reduces latency . These switches are widely used in telecommunications, data centers, industrial automation, and military applications .

Types of Fiber Optic Switches

  1. Mechanical Switches
    • Operate by physically moving fibers, mirrors, or prisms to redirect light .

    • Use tiny mirrors to redirect light from one fiber to multiple outputs .

    • Can be configured in 1xN, 2xN, or NxM matrices, supporting up to hundreds of ports .
    • Hermetically sealed for long-term stability and rugged environments.

  • Insertion Loss: Typically 0.4–2.5 dB, depending on technology .
