How to pair single-fiber optical modules

How to pair single-fiber optical modules

Page Content

Single-fiber (BiDi) optical modules transmit and receive data simultaneously over one fiber using complementary wavelengths, and must always be deployed in matched pairs.

Understanding Single-Fiber (BiDi) Modules

A single-fiber SFP, also called a BiDi SFP, enables bidirectional communication over a single strand of single-mode fiber by using wavelength division multiplexing (WDM). One module transmits on one wavelength (e.g., 1310 nm) and receives on another (e.g., 1550 nm), while the module at the other end uses the opposite configuration. This allows full-duplex communication without requiring a second fiber, reducing fiber usage and deployment costs .

Deployment Steps

  1. Select Matched Modules: Ensure you have a pair of BiDi SFPs with complementary wavelengths. For example, if one module transmits at 1310 nm and receives at 1550 nm, the other must transmit at 1550 nm and receive at 1310 nm .
  2. Insert Modules into Devices: Plug each SFP module into the SFP port of the network devices (switches, routers, or media converters). These modules are hot-swappable, so devices do not need to be powered down .
  3. Connect the Fiber: Use a single-mode LC simplex patch cord to connect the two modules. Only one fiber strand is needed, as both transmit and receive signals share the same fiber .
  4. Verify Link and Wavelength Matching: Confirm that the devices recognize the SFP modules and that the wavelengths are correctly paired. Incorrect pairing can prevent communication or cause signal interference .
  5. Test the Connection: Check network connectivity and throughput to ensure the link is operating at the expected speed (e.g., 1G, 10G) and that there is no crosstalk or signal degradation .

Practical Considerations

  • Fiber Efficiency: BiDi modules reduce fiber usage by 50% compared to traditional dual-fiber SFPs, which is especially useful in fiber-constrained environments like metro networks or data centers .
  • Wavelength Isolation: Modules use integrated filters to prevent interference between transmit and receive wavelengths, maintaining data integrity .
  • Compatibility: Ensure the SFP modules are compatible with the devices and network standards (e.g., 1G, 10G Ethernet) to avoid operational issues .
  • Applications: BiDi SFPs are suitable for direct switch-to-switch connections, fiber optic converters, or OEO converters, enabling Ethernet-to-fiber or multimode-to-single-mode transmission . By following these steps and ensuring proper wavelength pairing, a pair of single-fiber optical modules can provide reliable, full-duplex communication over a single fiber strand, optimizing network efficiency and reducing infrastructure costs.
