How to connect the cables in the outdoor fiber optic distribution box

Page Content

Connect outdoor fiber optic cables by preparing the feeding cable, securing it in the box, splicing fibers to pigtails or splitters, and routing drop cables to adapters while maintaining proper bend radius and slack.

Step 1: Prepare the Distribution Box

Choose an outdoor-rated fiber optic distribution box with weatherproofing and UV-resistant housing. Mount the box securely on a pole or wall using brackets or metal bands, ensuring the box is level and the gasket surfaces are even to prevent moisture ingress . Confirm the box type and capacity, including the number of splice trays, adapters, and whether a PLC splitter is required .

Step 2: Introduce the Feeding Cable

Insert the outdoor fiber optic cable through the designated cable inlet. Use a grommet or sealing device to secure the cable and prevent water entry . Fasten the cable to the box using nylon ties or clamps, and lock any reinforcing rods (FRP rods) to stabilize the cable . Protect the loose tube containing the fibers with insulation tape and attach it to the bottom splice tray.

Step 3: Splice and Connect Fibers

  • Strip the outer jacket and buffer of the fiber carefully, avoiding over-stripping.
  • Place the prepared fiber in the bottom tray for splicing.
  • Splice the fiber to pre-connectorized pigtails or to a PLC splitter using a fusion splicer, and protect the splice with heat-shrink sleeves .
  • Place the PLC splitter in the tray without bending the fiber cores, and connect the splitter outputs to SC or APC adapters on the top tray .

Step 4: Route Drop Cables

Route individual drop cables from the adapters to the subscriber lines. Use bend radius control clips to prevent sharp bends and secure the trunk cables with cable ties, leaving enough slack to allow the front panel to be pulled out without tension . Ensure that each pre-terminated fiber is connected to the correct adapter port, maintaining a one-to-one correspondence.

Step 5: Manage Slack and Close the Box

Store excess fiber in controlled loops within the splice tray to prevent stress or damage. Verify that all fibers are properly secured, adapters are accessible, and the box is sealed to protect against environmental exposure . Close the box and check that all connections are stable and free from tension.

Additional Tips

  • Avoid exceeding the minimum bend radius of fibers.
  • Keep the splice area clean and dry; use alcohol wipes and lint-free paper.
  • Monitor pulling tension during cable installation to prevent fiber breakage .
  • Label all fibers and adapters for easier maintenance and future expansion. Following these steps ensures a reliable, low-loss connection in outdoor fiber optic distribution boxes while protecting fibers from environmental and mechanical damage.
