Minimum Clearance

The 2026 National Electrical Code (NEC) Section 392.18(F) specifies that at least 12 inches of access space above cable trays must be maintained to permit installation and maintenance of cables . Exceptions

There are several exceptions where reduced clearance is allowed:

  • Cable types: Only tray-rated (Type TC) or metal-clad (Type MC) cables are permitted in open-air trays .
  • Fill limits: Power cables should not exceed 40% of the tray cross-sectional area, and control cables should not exceed 50% .
  • Separation: High-power and low-power cables must be separated to prevent electromagnetic interference (EMI), .
  • Grounding: Metallic trays can serve as equipment grounding conductors if properly bonded and continuous .
