How to connect fiber optic cables and fiber optic drop cables

Page Content

A fiber optic drop cable connects the distribution network to the subscriber's premises, typically using preterminated connectors or splicing to ensure reliable, high-speed connectivity.

Overview of Fiber Optic Drop Cables

Fiber optic drop cables are the final segment of the optical distribution network (ODN), linking the distribution cable terminal (such as a Fiber Access Terminal or FAT box) to the subscriber's Optical Network Terminal (ONT) or Optical Network Unit (ONU) inside the home or business . These cables usually contain 1 to 4 fibers, are lightweight, flexible, and designed to handle tight bends without significant signal loss . They can be installed aerially, underground, or indoors, depending on the environment .

Connection Methods

1. Preterminated (Plug-and-Play) Drop Cables

Preterminated drop cables are factory-terminated on one or both ends, allowing for simple plug-and-play installation at the subscriber interface . The main distribution cable is typically terminated in a fiber distribution hub (FDH) or terminal box, where the drop cable can be connected using mechanical connectors or adapter panels. This method eliminates the need for field splicing and reduces installation time and labor costs .

2. Fusion Splicing

When preterminated cables are not used, the drop cable can be fusion spliced to the distribution cable. This involves:

  • Stripping the fiber coating
  • Cleaving the fiber ends
  • Using a fusion splicer to join the fibers
  • Protecting the splice with a heat-shrink sleeve or splice tray Fusion splicing provides low insertion loss and high reliability, making it suitable for permanent installations .

3. Connectorized Terminations

Some drop cables are terminated with SC, LC, or other standard connectors. These connectors can be plugged directly into the ONT or into a patch panel inside the building. Connectorized solutions are convenient for multi-dwelling units (MDUs) or situations where frequent reconfiguration may be required .

Installation Considerations

  • Bend-Insensitive Fiber: Use G.657.A2 bend-insensitive fiber in drop cables to navigate tight indoor corners without significant attenuation loss .
  • Environmental Protection: Choose cables with appropriate jackets for aerial, underground, or indoor use, including UV resistance, rodent protection, and moisture-blocking layers .
  • Service Loops: Leave extra cable length in service loops at both ends to allow for future maintenance or re-termination .
  • Routing: Ensure smooth routing to avoid sharp bends or excessive tension, which can degrade signal quality .

Summary

Connecting a fiber optic cable to a drop cable involves either preterminated plug-and-play connections, fusion splicing, or connectorized terminations, depending on the network design and installation environment. Proper selection of drop cable type, bend-insensitive fiber, and careful routing ensures high-speed, reliable connectivity from the distribution network to the subscriber's premises .
