To extract the cores from a 24-core optical cable, carefully remove the outer sheath, expose the color-coded buffer tubes, and then strip and clean each individual fiber using precision tools.

Step 1: Prepare the Cable and Tools

Gather all necessary tools: a sheath knife, precision fiber stripper, cleaver, alcohol wipes, and protective sleeves or heat shrink tubes for later splicing or termination . Inspect the cable for damage and ensure it is cut to the desired length for your application .

Step 2: Remove the Outer Sheath

  1. Measure and mark approximately 2 meters (or as required by your local practice) from the cable end .
  2. Use a sheath knife to make a circumferential “ring” cut at the mark, taking care not to damage the ripcord or internal strength members .
  3. Flex the cable gently at the ring cut to separate the sheath and remove the section, exposing the ripcord and cable core .
  4. Pull the ripcord back to the first ring cut and remove the split sheath completely to reveal the cable core, which contains the color-coded buffer tubes .

  1. Identify the color-coded buffer tubes within the core; these tubes are typically secured with binder strings around a central strength member .
  2. Carefully cut or untwist the binder strings to free the individual buffer tubes without damaging the fibers .
  3. For each fiber, use a precision stripping tool to remove the protective coating, exposing the bare glass fiber. Only remove the outer layer to avoid fiber breakage .

Step 4: Clean and Prepare Fibers

  1. Clean each stripped fiber with alcohol wipes or a suitable cleaning solution to remove debris or coating residue .
  2. Ensure fibers are straight and free of bends or micro-cracks before splicing or connectorization .
