According to NEC Article 392, cable trays must remain accessible for maintenance and cannot be used in fully enclosed spaces like hoistways . Metallic trays must be properly grounded and bonded to ensure electrical safety . Covers are optional and typically used in high-traffic areas or outdoor installations to protect cables from physical damage or sunlight .

Firestopping in Electrical Shafts

When cable trays pass through shafts, walls, or slabs, openings must be tightly sealed with firestopping materials to prevent fire and smoke spread . Firestopping can include:

  • Fire-rated boards, firestop packs, or fire-resistant mineral wool
  • Firestop mastic for sealing gaps around cables
  • Fire-resistant backing plates for large openings
  • Cover plates that are square, properly sized, and painted evenly The gap between firestop materials and cables should not exceed 1 cm², and packing thickness should be at least 24 cm . At slab penetrations, a fire-support plate is recommended, and waterstops of at least 50 mm should be installed at floor-level penetrations . Proper layout ensures installation and maintenance access while maintaining fire protection.

Practical Guidance

  • Do not fully enclose cable trays in the shaft; they must remain accessible for inspection and maintenance .
  • Seal all penetrations where the tray passes through walls, floors, or ceilings using approved firestopping materials .
  • Use tray-rated cables to withstand open-air conditions inside the shaft .
  • Optional covers can be installed in areas prone to mechanical damage or environmental exposure, but they are not required by NEC . By following these guidelines, cable trays in low-voltage shafts remain safe, code-compliant, and maintainable, while firestopping ensures the shaft does not become a conduit for fire or smoke.
