While the fiber itself is not detectable due to its glass composition, GPR can identify the cable jacket, strengthening materials, ducts, or tracer wires. Electromagnetic Locators

Fiber Sensing Technologies

Practical Considerations

  • Non-metallic cables without tracer wires are difficult to detect with EM locators. GPR or fiber sensing may be required.
  • Ground conditions affect GPR performance; conductive soils or clutter can reduce accuracy.
  • Professional expertise is recommended for large-scale or critical projects to ensure safety and prevent accidental damage.
  • Marking detected cables clearly is essential to guide future excavation and maintenance .
