As of mid-2021, Nepal has installed approximately 1,600 kilometers of fiber optic cables under its Optical Fiber Backbone Network Expansion Project.

Overview of Fiber Optic Deployment

Nepal's fiber optic network expansion is managed by the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) and executed primarily by Nepal Telecom (NT). The project aims to connect multiple provinces and districts to enable high-speed data transfer, voice, and video communication . The expansion project began in 2012 with an initial goal of completing the network within two years, but progress has been slower than planned, with only 46.16% of the work completed by mid-2021 .

Installed Length and Coverage

  • Total installed length: Approximately 1,600 km of optical fiber has been laid across the country .
  • First phase coverage: Provinces 1, 2, and Bagmati have been largely completed by Nepal Telecom, covering over 1,000 km .
  • Pending sections: Installation in Gandaki and Lumbini provinces (Province 4 and 5) has been delayed due to legal and contractual issues, leaving 2,160 km of planned fiber yet to be installed .

Project Challenges

The expansion project has faced several hurdles:

  • Contractor delays: Companies like UTL and Smart Telecom failed to meet project deadlines, leading to contract cancellations .
  • Legal issues: Some sections of the project were halted due to Supreme Court cases .
  • Phased implementation: The project is divided into multiple sections, with different contractors responsible for specific provinces, causing uneven progress .

Future Plans

The NTA continues to plan for the completion of the remaining fiber optic network, aiming to connect all districts along major highways and expand broadband access nationwide. The project is funded through the Rural Telecommunications Development Fund and involves consultation with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology . In summary, while 1,600 km of fiber optic cables have been installed, the total planned network is significantly larger, with several thousand kilometers still pending completion across various provinces in Nepal .
