A clamp meter allows you to safely measure current in a distribution box by clamping around a single conductor without disconnecting the circuit.

Safety First

Confirm the meter has an appropriate CAT rating for the panel (e.g., CAT III for distribution circuits) and inspect test leads for damage . Always treat circuits as live until verified otherwise.

Steps to Measure Current

  1. Select the Correct Mode Rotate the meter's dial to AC or DC current depending on the circuit. For AC, look for a wavy line (~); for DC, a straight line (-) .
  2. Zero the Meter (for DC) If measuring DC current, close the jaws with no conductor inside and press the Zero button to remove any offset .
  3. Open the Clamp and Isolate a Single Conductor Press the trigger to open the jaws and position the clamp around only one current-carrying wire (hot or phase wire). Clamping around both hot and neutral wires will cancel the magnetic fields, giving a near-zero reading .
  4. Center the Conductor Place the wire in the center of the clamp jaw to minimize measurement error. Ensure the jaw closes completely .
  5. Read the Current Observe the reading on the digital display. For AC, the meter uses a current transformer; for DC, a Hall Effect sensor detects the magnetic field . Some meters provide True RMS readings for non-sinusoidal waveforms.
  6. Optional Features Use Peak Hold to capture transient spikes or motor start-up currents. For flexible current probes, follow manufacturer instructions and wear protective clothing if the circuit is live .
