Fiber Optic Splice Junction Box Installation Process

Fiber Optic Splice Junction Box Installation Process

Page Content

Installing a fiber optic splice junction box involves careful cable preparation, secure placement in the closure, precise splicing, and proper sealing to ensure network reliability and protection.

Step 1: Prepare the Fiber Cable

Begin by removing the outer jacket of the fiber optic cable, including any shielding or armor, to expose the loose tubes. Leave approximately 3 meters of cable for preparation. Clean the exposed fibers and strength members using a fiber cleaning solution, and abrade the outer jacket for about 150mm to ensure a clean surface for sealing. Remove any excess filling material to prevent contamination during splicing .

Step 2: Install the Cable in the Splice Closure

Select sealing rings that match the cable diameter and place them on the cable. Insert the cable into the designated entry port of the splice closure. Ground the cable shield if applicable. Wrap self-adhesive sealing tape between the sealing rings to create a secure, waterproof seal. Use a hose clamp or provided clamps to secure the cable to the base of the closure, ensuring stability and strain relief .

Step 3: Splice the Fibers

Open the splice closure and arrange the fibers in splice trays for organized management. Use a fusion splicer for permanent splices or a mechanical splice kit for temporary connections. After splicing, protect each joint with heat shrink tubing or mechanical protectors to prevent damage and signal loss. Ensure fibers are neatly arranged to maintain proper bend radius and avoid stress .

Step 4: Seal and Secure the Closure

Once all fibers are spliced and protected, seal the enclosure using heat-shrink tubing, mechanical gaskets, or other manufacturer-recommended methods. Ensure all entry points are properly sealed to prevent dust, moisture, and environmental ingress. Mount the closure in its designated location—whether aerial, underground, or wall-mounted—and verify it is properly supported .

Step 5: Test and Label

After installation, test the fiber connections using an optical power meter or OTDR to confirm signal integrity and acceptable loss levels. Label all cables and ports clearly for future maintenance and network management. Regular inspections are recommended to check for water ingress, physical damage, or strain on the fibers .

Tools and Materials Needed

  • Fiber cleaver and fusion splicer or mechanical splice kit
  • Heat shrink sleeves or mechanical protectors
  • Sealing tape and clamps
  • Cleaning supplies (alcohol wipes, fiber cleaning tools)
  • Cable jacket stripping tools Following these steps ensures a secure, organized, and long-lasting fiber optic splice junction box installation, protecting the network from environmental hazards and maintaining optimal performance .
