Testing fiber optic cables with an OTDR involves sending light pulses through the fiber, measuring reflections and backscatter, and analyzing the trace to locate faults, splices, and connectors.

Equipment Needed

  • OTDR unit compatible with your fiber type (single-mode or multimode) and wavelength (e.g., 1310 nm, 1550 nm for single-mode; 850/1300 nm for multimode) .
  • Launch and receive cables of the same fiber type and core size as the cable under test. Launch cables help bypass the OTDR's dead zone, and receive cables allow measurement of the final connector loss .
  • Mating adapters compatible with the connectors on the fiber.
  • Cleaning supplies: high-grade fiber optic cleaning fluids, lint-free wipes, and optical swabs .

Step-by-Step Procedure

  1. Power on and warm up the OTDR to ensure stable operation .
  2. Clean all connectors and adapters thoroughly to prevent measurement errors caused by dirt or dust .
  3. Connect the launch cable to the OTDR and attach the fiber under test to the far end of the launch cable. If using a receive cable, attach it to the far end of the fiber .
  4. Set OTDR parameters:
    • Select the appropriate wavelength for the fiber.
    • Choose pulse width based on fiber length: shorter pulses for higher resolution, longer pulses for longer distances .
    • Set the distance range to cover the entire fiber link.
  5. Start the measurement and allow the OTDR to acquire the trace. Monitor the real-time trace to ensure the end of the fiber is visible and the trace is clean .
  6. Analyze the trace:
    • Reflective peaks indicate connectors or mechanical splices.
    • Non-reflective losses indicate fusion splices or bends.
    • End of fiber can be reflective (connector or break) or non-reflective (cleaved fiber) .
  7. Manual verification: Use cursor functions to measure distances and verify automatic event detection accuracy .
  8. Save and document: Store trace files with descriptive names and export event tables and summary reports for record-keeping .

  • Always clean connectors before testing; contamination is the leading cause of measurement errors .
  • Use launch cables approximately 10% of the total fiber length to avoid dead zones .
  • Avoid relying solely on OTDR “autotest” functions; manual marker placement ensures accurate splice and attenuation measurements .
  • Regular OTDR testing supports preventive maintenance and helps identify potential faults before network downtime occurs . By following these steps and best practices, you can accurately characterize fiber optic cables, locate faults, and document the network's performance for maintenance or commissioning purposes.
