Bus-type vibration optical cable

Bus-type vibration optical cable

Page Content

Bus-type vibration optical cables are fiber optic systems designed for high-sensitivity, large-scale vibration detection, commonly used in perimeter security and infrastructure monitoring.

Overview

Bus-type vibration optical cables use ordinary communication-grade optical fibers as sensing elements to detect vibrations along a continuous path. Unlike point sensors, these cables can monitor long distances and multiple zones simultaneously, making them ideal for perimeter protection, pipeline monitoring, and industrial infrastructure . The “bus-type” configuration allows a single optical cable host to manage multiple defense zones (up to 35 per host), and multiple hosts can be stacked for larger coverage .

Structure and Components

A typical bus-type vibration optical cable system includes:

  • Vibration optical cable: Acts as the sensing medium, detecting vibrations caused by intrusion, wind, or environmental disturbances .
  • Collector and terminal box: Connects the cable to the main detection host.
  • Optical cable vibration detection host: Processes signals from the cable using high-speed chips to filter out noise and interference .
  • Wind and rain vibration detection ring: Differentiates between environmental vibrations and actual intrusion events .
  • Linkage host and alarm devices: Trigger alerts such as buzzers or video review when abnormal vibrations are detected . The system uses single-mode fiber for cost-effective, long-distance sensing and is resistant to magnetic interference, lightning, corrosion, water, and UV exposure .

Applications

Bus-type vibration optical cables are widely used in:

  • Perimeter security: Airports, residential areas, chemical plants, and oil pipelines .
  • Infrastructure monitoring: Bridges, tunnels, and railways, where continuous vibration monitoring is critical .
  • Industrial monitoring: Detecting structural vibrations, machinery faults, or unauthorized access .

Advantages

  • High sensitivity and real-time detection: Capable of detecting subtle vibrations over long distances .
  • Large-scale coverage: One host can manage multiple zones, reducing hardware requirements .
  • Environmental resilience: Anti-magnetic, anti-lightning, waterproof, and UV-resistant .
  • Integration with DAS/DVS systems: Can provide detailed vibration analysis and localization using Distributed Acoustic Sensing technology .
  • Reduced false alarms: Advanced signal processing and wind/rain detection rings minimize environmental interference .

Deployment Considerations

For optimal performance, the cable should be properly coupled to the ground or structure. Studies show that cement-bonded fixed fiber on road shoulders or secure attachment to monitored structures provides the most reliable vibration signal detection . Underground ducts or loosely laid fibers may reduce sensitivity. Bus-type vibration optical cables represent a next-generation solution for continuous, large-scale vibration monitoring, combining the advantages of fiber optics with advanced signal processing to ensure accurate, reliable, and scalable detection.
