Step 1: Safety Precautions

Before starting, isolate all power sources and verify the absence of voltage using a certified tester. Apply lockout-tagout (LOTO) procedures to prevent accidental energization. Wear appropriate PPE, including gloves, safety goggles, and flame-resistant clothing, especially in industrial or high-voltage environments .

Step 2: Identify the Thermostat or Controller Type

  • Normally Closed (NC) Thermostats: Used for heating elements. The circuit is closed below the set temperature, allowing power to flow to the heater. When the temperature exceeds the set point, the contacts open, cutting power to prevent overheating .
  • Normally Open (NO) Thermostats: Used for cooling devices like fans. The circuit is open below the set temperature and closes when the temperature rises above the threshold, activating the cooling device .

Step 3: Wiring the Power Supply

  1. Connect the live (L) and neutral (N) wires from the main power supply to the input terminals of the thermostat or temperature controller .
  2. Connect the heater or cooling device to the output terminals of the thermostat/controller in series. This ensures the device operates only when the controller detects a temperature change .
  3. Attach a ground wire from the device and the enclosure to the cabinet's grounding point to protect against electrical faults .

Step 4: Sensor Connections

  • For thermocouples, ensure correct polarity when connecting to the controller.
  • For RTDs, match the number of wires (two, three, or four) to the controller configuration to avoid resistance errors .

Step 5: Mounting and Cable Management

  • Mount the power supply and controller securely, preferably on a DIN rail for industrial cabinets.
  • Maintain proper spacing for heat dissipation and separate power and signal cables to reduce interference .
  • Ensure airflow around the power supply to prevent overheating.

Step 6: Testing and Commissioning

  1. Simulate temperature changes to verify the controller responds correctly.
  2. Test the heater or fan to ensure it activates at the set temperature.
  3. Check high and low-temperature alarms if available, confirming they trigger alerts or emergency shutdowns as needed . Following these steps ensures safe, reliable, and efficient temperature control within your network cabinet, protecting sensitive equipment from overheating or condensation.
