Terminal FC Interface

Terminal FC Interface

Page Content

A terminal FC interface is a physical or virtual port used to connect servers or storage devices to a Fibre Channel SAN, enabling high-speed, low-latency data transfer.

Overview

A terminal FC interface serves as the endpoint connection in a Fibre Channel network, linking servers, storage arrays, or switches to the SAN fabric. These interfaces can be physical FC ports on switches or servers, or virtual FC (vFC) interfaces that operate over Ethernet using FCoE (Fibre Channel over Ethernet) technology . They are essential for establishing communication between N_Ports (node ports) and F_Ports (fabric ports) in the SAN.

Types of FC Interfaces

  1. Physical FC Interfaces
    • Found on SAN switches or host bus adapters (HBAs).
    • Can operate in multiple modes such as E, F, NP, TE, TF, TNP, SD, or Auto .
    • Used as uplinks to the SAN fabric or downlinks to servers.
    • Require proper licensing on some switches to become operational .
  2. Virtual FC (vFC) Interfaces
    • Operate over FCoE-capable Ethernet interfaces.
    • Support only F mode and function in trunk mode to carry multiple VSANs .
    • Useful for consolidating FC and Ethernet traffic on the same physical link.
  3. NP_Port Interfaces on Gateways
    • Configured on FCoE-FC gateways to connect to FC switch F_Ports.
    • Each NP_Port acts as a proxy for a host or device logging into the FC fabric .
    • Typically configured in blocks of six or twelve physical interfaces per local fabric.

Terminal Fiber Optic Boxes

For physical cabling, fiber optic terminal boxes provide a convenient interface for connecting multiple FC cables. These boxes often support ST, SC, FC, and LC connectors, allowing organized and secure connections between transceivers and the SAN infrastructure . They help manage cabling, reduce signal loss, and simplify troubleshooting.

Configuration and Usage

  • On switches, FC interfaces are configured via CLI commands to set speed, mode, and VSAN membership .
  • Virtual FC interfaces require trunk configuration to allow multiple VSANs, while physical FC ports may be assigned to a single VSAN.
  • Proper password management and IP configuration are critical for switch access and operational stability .

Summary

A terminal FC interface is the critical endpoint in a SAN, whether physical or virtual, enabling servers and storage devices to communicate over a Fibre Channel network. Understanding the type of interface, its mode, and proper configuration ensures reliable, high-speed storage connectivity and efficient SAN management .
