Fiber optic connector connection method

Fiber optic connector connection method

Page Content

Connecting a fiber optic connector involves careful preparation, precise fiber handling, and meticulous alignment to ensure low-loss, high-performance connections.

Step 1: Preparatory Work

Gather all necessary tools and materials, including fiber strippers, cleaver, crimping pliers, fiber holders, UV or epoxy glue, UV lamp, anhydrous alcohol, and safety equipment such as gloves and safety glasses . Ensure a clean, dust-free environment to prevent contamination of the fiber end-face .

Step 2: Fiber Inspection

Examine the fiber for any damage, kinks, or bends. Perform a visual inspection using a magnifying glass or fiber inspection microscope to detect cracks, chips, or scratches. Conduct a flex test by gently bending the fiber to check for weaknesses .

Step 3: Prepare the Connector

Remove the connector boot and riveting ring, then insert them onto the fiber. For connectors like LC, SC, FC, or ST, note the specific mechanism (latch, push-pull, threaded, or bayonet twist-lock) as it affects insertion steps .

Step 4: Apply Glue

Inject UV or epoxy glue into the connector ferrule from the tail handle until it slightly overflows. Set the connector aside to allow the glue to settle before proceeding .

Step 5: Cleaving the Fiber

Strip the protective coating from the fiber using a fiber stripper. Use a cleaver to cut the fiber to the precise length required for the connector, ensuring a clean, flat end-face .

Step 6: Insert Fiber into Connector

Place the cleaved fiber into the connector ferrule, aligning it carefully with the core. Ensure the fiber is seated properly and that the ferrule holds it securely. For some connectors, a crimping step may be required to lock the fiber in place .

Step 7: Polishing and Finishing

Polish the fiber end-face to remove any excess glue and achieve a smooth, flat surface. Proper polishing reduces insertion loss and ensures optimal light transmission .

Step 8: Testing and Verification

After assembly, test the connection using an optical power meter or light source to verify low insertion loss and signal integrity. Clean the connector and port again if necessary to remove any dust or debris .

Step 9: Final Assembly

Attach the connector boot and strain relief components. Ensure the cable bend radius and pulling load limits are respected to prevent physical damage during installation . By following these steps carefully, you can achieve a reliable, low-loss fiber optic connection suitable for both single-mode and multi-mode applications, ensuring high-speed and stable data transmission.
