Overview of Single-Mode Fibers

Single-mode optical fibers (SMF) are designed to carry only one mode of light, meaning the light travels in a single, straight path through the fiber core. This design minimizes modal dispersion, allowing signals to travel over long distances up to 100 kilometers without the need for signal regeneration. The typical core diameter is 8–10 micrometers, much smaller than multimode fibers, which allows for precise, high-bandwidth communication .

Two-Fiber Configuration

A 2-core single-mode fiber setup uses two separate fiber strands, often for bidirectional communication: one fiber transmits data in one direction, while the other carries data in the opposite direction. This is analogous to a two-lane highway, allowing simultaneous traffic flow and doubling the data capacity compared to a single-core fiber . Two-fiber cables are commonly used in telecom backbones, data center interconnects, and FTTH (Fiber to the Home) deployments.

Standards and Types

The most widely used single-mode fibers conform to ITU-T G.652 standards, with G.652.D being the "future-proof" variant suitable for Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) systems. These fibers support both 1310 nm (O-band) and 1550 nm (C-band) wavelengths, making them versatile for current and future network upgrades . Single-mode fibers can be further classified as OS1 (indoor) and OS2 (outdoor), with OS2 optimized for longer distances and higher bandwidth .
