Optical module labels, such as GLC-SX-MMD, SFP-10G-LR, or QSFP-40G-SR4, follow a structured naming convention that conveys essential details:

  • Module Type: Indicates the form factor (SFP, SFP+, QSFP, QSFP28) and sometimes the speed (e.g., 1G, 10G, 25G, 40G).
  • Transmission Distance: Often included in the code (e.g., SX for short-range, LR for long-range, ZX for extended range).
  • Wavelength: Some codes specify the operating wavelength in nanometers (e.g., 850 nm for SX, 1310 nm for LR).
  • Connector Type: Certain letters indicate the type of fiber connector supported.
  • Vendor and Part Number: The label includes a vendor-specific code and part number for identification and compatibility checks .

Reading EEPROM Data

Every optical module contains a small EEPROM chip storing two main types of information:

  1. Serial-ID Block (Base EEPROM at address 0xA0):
    • Vendor name and OUI (Organizationally Unique Identifier)
    • Part number and revision
    • Connector type and capabilities
  2. Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM/DOM at address 0xA2):
    • Real-time temperature, voltage, TX/RX power
    • Alarm and warning thresholds
    • Calibration constants for accurate readings Reading the EEPROM allows you to verify compatibility, identify mismatched optics, and monitor link health without physically swapping modules .

Practical Steps to Decode a Label

  1. Identify the form factor and speed from the prefix (e.g., SFP, SFP+, QSFP28).
  2. Check the transmission type and distance using the middle code (e.g., SX = short-range, LR = long-range).
  3. Confirm wavelength and fiber type if included in the code.
  4. Look up the vendor and part number to verify compatibility with your switch or router.
  5. Optionally, read the EEPROM using switch commands or diagnostic tools to get real-time operational data like TX/RX power and temperature .

  • Always refer to the vendor's datasheet for exact decoding rules, as naming conventions may vary slightly.
