Mechanical Splicing

Mechanical splicing physically aligns the fiber ends within a small housing, often using an index-matching gel to bridge the microscopic gap between fibers. Steps include:

  • Stripping and cleaving the fiber ends.
  • Inserting fibers into a mechanical splice unit.
  • Aligning the fibers and securing them with the gel or epoxy. Advantages:
  • Quick and practical for field repairs or temporary connections.
  • No external power or fusion splicer required.
  • Lower initial cost and easier to deploy in emergency situations. Considerations:
  • Higher signal loss (typically 0.2–0.75 dB) compared to fusion splicing.
