Overview

An Integrated Power Supply (IPS) is a centralized power system designed to supply regulated AC and DC power to multiple railway signalling and telecommunication circuits. It ensures continuous operation of critical railway infrastructure even during mains power fluctuations or interruptions, which is essential for safe and punctual train movement .

Components and Design

Modern IPS systems are SMPS-based (Switch Mode Power Supply) and integrate several power components into a single unit:

• FRBC Panel (SMPS Panel): Contains AC-to-DC rectifier modules, typically rated at 110V/20A, working in parallel for load sharing. It charges the battery bank and supplies DC power to other panels .
• DC Distribution Panel: Houses DC-DC converters that feed power to signalling loads such as axle counters, point machines, and relay circuits .
• AC Distribution Panel: Combines inverters, step-down transformers, and automatic voltage regulators to supply AC circuits .
• Battery Bank: Usually a single 110V battery set (200–300 AH) with continuous health monitoring and alarms for status indication .
• Protection Systems: Built-in Class B and C lightning and surge protection, overload, and short-circuit safeguards .

• High Efficiency: Typically above 90% with power factor >0.9 .
• Redundancy: Modular design with n+1 hot standby modules allows maintenance or expansion without downtime .

IPS systems are widely used in wayside and medium-sized signalling installations across both RE (Remote Electrified) and Non-RE areas. They are critical for:
