Chip-on-Board (COB): Integrates optical and electronic components directly on a PCB to improve heat dissipation, signal integrity, and overall optoelectronic performance. COB is widely used in 400G, 800G, and 1.6T modules . Near-Packaged Optics (NPO): Places the optical engine and processing chip (GPU, NPU, or switch) side-by-side on the same high-performance PCB or organic substrate. This shortens the electrical path, reduces channel loss, and supports high-bandwidth transmission (800G and above) while maintaining independent thermal management for the optical engine . Optical Interfaces and Fiber Connectivity: Optical modules support various fiber types and connector interfaces, including LC, SC, and MU. Advanced modules may implement WDM (CWDM or DWDM) to transmit multiple wavelengths over a single fiber, increasing capacity .

Supporting Technologies

Printed Circuit Boards (PCB): Serve as the backbone for electrical interconnection between optical and electronic components. High-density, multilayer, and flexible PCBs are critical for miniaturization and high-speed performance . Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM): Enables real-time monitoring of parameters such as optical power, temperature, voltage, and laser bias current, ensuring reliable operation and interoperability across devices .
