To enable aggregation on a core switch, configure a Link Aggregation Group (LAG) using LACP to bundle multiple physical ports into a single logical channel for increased bandwidth and redundancy.

Understanding Aggregation

Link aggregation allows multiple Ethernet ports to function as a single logical link, improving throughput and providing failover if one port fails. On a core switch, aggregation is typically used to connect to aggregation or access switches, ensuring high availability and efficient traffic distribution .

Steps to Enable Aggregation

  1. Identify Ports for Aggregation Select the physical ports on the core switch that will be part of the aggregation. Ensure they are sequential and compatible with LACP .
  2. Create a Link Aggregation Group (LAG)
    • Access the switch management interface (CLI or web GUI).
    • Navigate to Port Management > Link Aggregation > LAG Management.
    • Define a new LAG and assign the selected member ports .
  3. Enable LACP
    • LACP (Link Aggregation Control Protocol) must be enabled on both ends of the link.
    • Choose the mode:
      • Active: The switch actively sends LACP packets to negotiate aggregation.
      • Passive: The switch responds to LACP packets but does not initiate them .
  4. Configure Load Balancing
    • Set the load balancing algorithm based on MAC addresses, IP addresses, or a combination (IP/MAC) to distribute traffic efficiently across the aggregated links .
  5. Verify Configuration
    • Check the LAG status to ensure all member ports are active and properly negotiated.
    • Confirm that traffic is being balanced and redundancy is functional.

Best Practices

  • Downstream First: Configure aggregation on the most downstream switch before moving upstream to the core switch .
  • VLAN and Management Considerations: Ensure the core switch has a management VLAN configured and that aggregation ports are assigned to the correct VLANs for proper traffic flow .
  • Use High-Speed Links: For core-to-aggregation connections, SFP+ or higher-speed ports are recommended to maximize throughput .
  • Redundancy: Consider MC-LAG (Multi-Chassis LAG) if connecting to multiple aggregation switches for higher resilience . By following these steps, your core switch will efficiently aggregate multiple ports, providing higher bandwidth, redundancy, and improved network performance.
