Correct Installation Method for Fiber Optic Reel

Correct Installation Method for Fiber Optic Reel

Page Content

Fiber optic cable reels can be installed using either the moving reel or stationary reel method, with careful attention to tension, bend radius, and handling to prevent damage.

Moving Reel Method

The moving reel method is used when vehicles carrying the cable reel can drive along most of the cable route. In this method, the cable is raised and lashed to the support strand in a single operation, allowing continuous deployment as the vehicle moves along the route. This method is efficient for long aerial runs where vehicle access is available and reduces the need for intermediate handling points .

Stationary Reel Method

The stationary reel method is applied when vehicles cannot access the majority of the cable route. The reel remains in a fixed location, and the cable is pulled into place using cable blocks. Lashing begins at the far end of the route, with the lasher moving toward the stationary reel. This method requires careful planning of intermediate access points and splice locations to ensure smooth cable deployment .

Cable Handling and Safety

  • Inspect reels before installation for damage, broken flanges, or nails that could harm the cable .
  • Protect the cable when laying it on surfaces using barricades or cones to prevent pedestrian or vehicular damage .
  • Figure-eight handling is recommended when removing cable from the reel to prevent twisting. Loops should be 5–8 ft (1.5–2.4 m) in diameter and about 15 ft (4.5 m) in length. Mechanical figure-eight machines can speed up this process while maintaining the minimum bend radius .
  • Minimum bend radius: Under tension, the cable should not be bent below 20 times its diameter; without tension, not below 10 times its diameter .
  • Maximum pulling tension: Standard fiber optic cables typically have a maximum recommended pulling tension of 600 lbs. Exceeding this can damage fibers .

Reel Setup and Installation

  • Reels should be lifted using proper equipment, such as forklifts with forks perpendicular to the reel, and never dropped to avoid structural damage .
  • Secure the reel to a solid surface using bolts or mounting points to prevent movement during deployment .
  • For vertical installations, clamp the cable at frequent intervals to prevent excessive weight from exceeding the long-term load rating .

Summary

Proper fiber optic cable reel installation requires selecting the appropriate method based on route access, maintaining tension limits, respecting minimum bend radius, and using safe handling practices. Both moving and stationary reel methods are effective when executed with careful planning, proper equipment, and adherence to safety standards .
