Overview

A single busbar system is the simplest substation configuration where all incoming and outgoing feeders, transformers, or generators connect to one common bus through circuit breakers and isolators . In a segmented or sectionalized single busbar, the bus is divided into two or more sections using bus coupler breakers and isolators, which allows one section to be de-energized for maintenance or fault clearance while the other sections remain operational .

Structure and Components

A typical sectionalized single busbar connection includes:

  • Bus sections: Two or more segments of the main bus.
  • Bus isolating switches: Connect each bus section to outgoing feeders or transformers.
  • Wire-outgoing breakers: Protect individual feeders or transformers.
  • Bus transfer isolating switch: Connects the segments to allow flexible operation and load transfer between sections .
  • Instrument transformers: Electronic current and voltage transformers for protection and metering . This arrangement reduces the number of breakers and isolators compared to a double-bus system, saving space and cost while maintaining operational flexibility .

Segmented busbars often employ bus differential protection and automatic spare power switching to ensure safe operation. This prevents incorrect tripping and enhances grid reliability.

Applications

  • Medium and small substations where continuity is desirable but not critical.
  • MV and LV indoor switchboards (e.g., 11 kV systems).
  • Power plants and transformer stations requiring flexible operation and fault localization .

Limitations

  • Complexity increases slightly compared to a simple single bus.
  • Requires careful coordination of isolators, breakers, and protection devices.
  • Not as flexible as double-bus systems for very high-criticality loads . In summary, a single busbar segmented connection balances simplicity, cost, and operational flexibility, making it suitable for substations where partial continuity is required and full double-bus redundancy is not justified. It integrates sectionalization and protection mechanisms to maintain supply during faults or maintenance.
