Single-mode optical fibers are classified into several types based on ITU-T standards, dispersion properties, and bend performance, with G.652 and G.657 being the most widely used.

Overview of Single-Mode Fiber

Single-mode fibers (SMF) are designed to carry a single light mode, minimizing modal dispersion and enabling long-distance, high-bandwidth transmission. They typically have a core diameter of 8–10 micrometers, allowing signals to travel over distances up to 100 km without regeneration . SMFs are essential for telecom backbones, data center interconnects, and FTTH deployments .

ITU-T Standard Types

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) classifies single-mode fibers into several categories:

  • G.651: Primarily a multimode graded-index fiber, sometimes referenced for short-distance applications up to 500 meters .
  • G.652 (Standard Single-Mode Fiber): The most common type, available in variants A, B, C, and D. It features low attenuation and is suitable for long-haul and metropolitan networks. G.652.D is considered "future-proof," supporting DWDM systems and GPON networks .
  • G.653 (Dispersion-Shifted Fiber): Designed to shift zero-dispersion wavelength to 1550 nm for long-distance single-channel systems. It is largely replaced by G.655 due to nonlinear effects .
  • G.654 (Cutoff Wavelength-Shifted Fiber): Optimized for long-distance transmission with minimal attenuation at 1550 nm, ideal for submarine and long-haul networks .
  • G.655 (Nonzero Dispersion-Shifted Fiber): Maintains a small, nonzero dispersion to reduce nonlinear effects in DWDM systems.
  • G.656 (Low-Slope Nonzero Dispersion-Shifted Fiber): Ensures consistent performance over a wide wavelength range, suitable for DWDM applications .
  • G.657 (Bend-Insensitive Fiber): Offers a small minimum bend radius (5–10 mm), making it ideal for FTTH and environments with tight bends .

Other Classifications

Single-mode fibers can also be categorized by optical specifications:

  • OS1: Indoor-rated fiber with maximum attenuation of 0.4 dB/km at 1310 nm, suitable for distances up to 10 km .
  • OS2: Outdoor-rated fiber with maximum attenuation of 0.3 dB/km at 1550 nm, supporting distances up to 40 km .

Applications

  • Long-Haul Networks: G.652, G.654, and G.655 fibers are preferred for backbone and intercity links.
  • FTTH and Access Networks: G.657 fibers are ideal due to bend insensitivity.
  • DWDM Systems: G.652.D, G.656, and G.655 fibers support dense wavelength multiplexing with minimal dispersion issues. Understanding these types ensures proper fiber selection for network performance, distance requirements, and environmental constraints .
