A common optical cable consists of a core, cladding, protective coatings, strength members, and an outer jacket, all designed to transmit light efficiently while protecting the fragile fibers.

Core

The core is the central part of the optical fiber where light signals are transmitted. It is typically made of high-purity silica glass or, in some cases, plastic. The core's diameter varies depending on the fiber type: single-mode fibers have a small core around 9 microns, ideal for long-distance transmission, while multimode fibers have larger cores (50–62.5 microns) suitable for shorter distances and multiple light modes .

Cladding

Surrounding the core is the cladding, which has a slightly lower refractive index than the core. This difference enables total internal reflection, keeping light confined within the core for efficient transmission over long distances . The cladding is usually made of silica with dopants to maintain the refractive index difference.

Coating

The coating or primary buffer layer is applied over the cladding to protect the fiber from physical damage, moisture, and microbending. It is typically made of acrylate or polyimide polymers and does not affect the optical properties of the fiber . Proper curing and thickness ensure long-term durability.

Strength Members

Optical cables include strength members to bear mechanical stress during installation and operation. These can be fiberglass rods, aramid yarn (Kevlar®), or steel wires, depending on the required tensile strength, flexibility, and environmental resistance. Central strength rods prevent buckling in loose-tube or ribbon cables, while aramid yarn provides high tensile strength without stretching .

Outer Jacket

The outer jacket encases the fiber and strength members, providing protection against environmental factors such as moisture, abrasion, and UV exposure. Materials like polyethylene or PVC are commonly used, and additional layers may be added for outdoor or underground installations .

Additional Features

Some cables include ripcords for easy jacket removal during splicing or repairs, and light-absorbing fillers to reduce crosstalk in multi-fiber bundles . Loose-tube designs allow fibers to expand and contract with temperature changes, making them suitable for outdoor applications .
