Not all optical modules use LC interfaces; while LC is common, SC, MPO, and MTP connectors are also used depending on the module type and application.

LC Connectors

LC connectors are the most widely used interface for modern optical modules, especially in SFP, SFP+, XFP, QSFP+, and QSFP28 modules. They are small, duplex connectors that support high-density deployments and are compatible with single-mode and multimode fibers . LC connectors are favored for their compact size, low insertion loss, and suitability for high-speed data transmission in data centers and enterprise networks .

SC Connectors

SC connectors are larger than LC connectors and were commonly used in legacy networks. They are still found in some Gigabit and 10 Gigabit Ethernet modules, such as X2 optical modules, and are valued for their simple push-pull design and reliability . SC modules are less common in modern high-density deployments due to their larger size.

MPO/MTP Connectors

MPO (Multi-fiber Push On) and MTP (Multi-fiber Terminated Push-In) connectors are designed for high-density cabling and multi-channel optical modules, such as 40G and 100G transceivers. These connectors can handle multiple fibers simultaneously, making them ideal for backbone and data center applications where space and high throughput are critical . They are not typically used on standard SFP modules but are common in QSFP and higher-speed modules.
