Direct-burial optical cable installation involves careful planning, trenching or plowing, proper cable handling, and protective measures to ensure long-term performance and safety.

Planning and Preparation

Before installation, the route must be surveyed and marked, considering environmental and regulatory requirements, including any necessary permits or EPA studies. Cable lengths are calculated by an OSP (Outside Plant) Engineer, accounting for splice locations, vehicle access, and minimum excess cable for slack and future maintenance . All personnel should be familiar with OSHA regulations and company safety procedures for buried cable operations .

Cable Handling

Inspect cable reels for damage, broken flanges, or imperfections before use .
Store reels with thermal protective coverings intact and secure against vandalism or environmental damage .
When unspooling, use a figure-eight configuration to prevent kinking or twisting, with loops approximately 4.5 meters (15 ft) long and 1.5–2.4 meters (5–8 ft) in diameter .
Avoid coiling in a continuous direction for lengths over 30 meters (100 ft), .
Adhere to the cable's minimum bend radius and maximum rated cable load (MRCL) to prevent long-term transmission degradation .

Trenching and Plowing

Trenching: Excavate a trench to the recommended depth, typically below the frost line, and ensure the bottom is free of sharp objects .
Plowing: A plow can be used for long, open runs, embedding the cable directly into the soil while minimizing manual handling .
For armored cables or areas with high mechanical risk, additional protection such as metal armor, warning tape, or tracer wire may be used .

Installation and Protection

Place the cable carefully in the trench or plow path, avoiding excessive pulling force or sharp bends .
Use backfill material that protects the cable from crushing, moisture, and rodent damage .
Consider burying a warning tape approximately 30 cm (12 in) above the cable to alert future excavators .
At transitions to conduit or manholes, unroll the cable using the figure-eight method to prevent twisting .

Post-Installation

Verify cable integrity and perform any required testing before final backfilling .
Maintain documentation of the installed route, depths, and protective measures for future maintenance or troubleshooting .
