Huawei Switch Optical Port Stacking Configuration

Huawei Switch Optical Port Stacking Configuration

Page Content

Huawei switches allow multiple optical ports to be bound to logical stack ports, supporting chain and ring topologies for reliable and high-bandwidth stacking.

Physical and Logical Port Configuration

Huawei switches, such as the S5700 series, allow the first two 10GE optical ports to be configured as physical member ports of logical stack port 1, and the last two 10GE optical ports as physical member ports of logical stack port 2 . Multiple physical ports can be bound to a single logical stack port to increase bandwidth and improve stack reliability. When connecting switches, stack-port n/1 on one switch must connect to stack-port m/2 on another switch, and the sequence of physical ports does not matter if multiple ports are used .

Supported Topologies

  • Chain Topology: Suitable for two switches; simple but has a single point of failure. Only one logical stack port per switch is recommended in this case .
  • Ring Topology: Recommended for three or more switches; provides redundancy and prevents stack split as long as at least one physical link remains active .

Best Practices

  1. Verify Compatibility: Ensure the optical modules and fibers are compatible (single-mode vs multimode) and match the interface speed .
  2. Use Certified Stack Cables: For dedicated stack connections, use Huawei-certified stack cables or service ports .
  3. Set Member IDs and Priorities: Configure member IDs and priorities before connecting stack cables to avoid conflicts .
  4. ESD Precautions: Wear an anti-static wrist strap and connect it to the ESD socket on the rack before handling optical ports .
  5. Firmware Synchronization: Enable auto-upgrade to synchronize firmware across all stack members .
  6. Bandwidth Consideration: The stack bandwidth is determined by the minimum bandwidth among all stack ports, so ensure all physical links are consistent .

Additional Notes

  • When stacking multiple switches, logical stack ports can contain multiple physical ports, and the physical connections can be made in any sequence for flexibility .
  • Ports used for stacking cannot be used as normal service ports, so plan your network port allocation accordingly .
  • For connecting the stack to other network devices, use Eth-Trunk and configure edge ports to prevent STP recalculation . By following these guidelines, Huawei switch stacks using optical ports can achieve high reliability, simplified management, and scalable bandwidth.
