Caling from OLT to Optical Distribution Box

Caling from OLT to Optical Distribution Box

Page Content

The OLT sends optical signals downstream through the optical distribution network, which are split and routed via optical distribution boxes to reach end-user ONUs/ONTs.

Role of the OLT

The Optical Line Terminal (OLT) is located at the central office or service provider's access node and serves as the central management point for the PON (Passive Optical Network). It converts electrical signals into optical signals, manages bandwidth allocation, authenticates users, and controls upstream and downstream traffic to multiple end users . Each OLT port can serve multiple users through optical splitters, supporting both IP and traditional TDM services .

Optical Distribution Network (ODN)

The ODN connects the OLT to end-user equipment (ONU/ONT) and consists of:

  • Feeder fiber: Runs from the OLT or Optical Distribution Frame (ODF) to a distribution point.
  • Optical splitters: Divide the optical signal to serve multiple users.
  • Distribution fiber: Connects splitters to optical distribution boxes.
  • Drop fiber: Runs from the optical distribution box to the user's ONT/ONU .

Optical Distribution Box (ODB/FDB)

The Optical Distribution Box (ODB), also called a Fiber Distribution Box (FDB), is typically installed in the field (on poles, walls, or underground cabinets). Its main functions are:

  • Signal distribution: Receives optical signals from the feeder fiber and routes them to multiple drop fibers.
  • Splitter integration: Houses secondary splitters if a two-stage splitting architecture is used.
  • Protection and management: Protects fiber connections, provides splicing points, and allows easy maintenance .

Connection Workflow

  1. OLT to ODF: The OLT outputs optical signals to the Optical Distribution Frame (ODF) in the central office.
  2. ODF to Splitter: Signals are sent through feeder fibers to a primary optical splitter or directly to the distribution network.
  3. Splitter to ODB: In a two-stage split architecture, the first-stage splitter may be at a central point, and the second-stage splitter is housed in the ODB.
  4. ODB to End Users: The ODB distributes the split optical signals via drop fibers to individual ONUs/ONTs at customer premises .

Key Considerations

  • Split ratio: Determines how many users share a single OLT port; common ratios are 1:32 or 1:64.
  • Signal loss: Each splitter introduces attenuation; proper planning ensures the optical budget is maintained.
  • Scalability: ODBs allow flexible expansion by adding more drop fibers or splitters without modifying the OLT. In summary, the OLT initiates the optical signal, which travels through the ODN, is optionally split in stages, and is finally distributed via the optical distribution box to reach individual end users, ensuring efficient and manageable FTTH deployment .
