The light-emitting port on an optical module is the transmitting side, where the Transmitter Optical Sub-Assembly (TOSA) emits optical signals.

Overview

The TOSA (Transmitter Optical Sub-Assembly) is the component responsible for converting electrical signals into optical signals in an optical module . It contains a laser diode (LD) or light-emitting diode (LED), a driver chip, and an optical interface. When the electrical signal is processed by the driver chip, it drives the laser or LED to emit a modulated optical signal through the optical port . This port is the transmitting port, which connects to the fiber optic cable that carries the signal to the receiving device.

Components of the Light-Emitting Port

  • Light Source: Typically a laser diode for high-speed, long-distance transmission, or an LED for lower-speed, short-distance applications .
  • Optical Interface: The physical port where the optical fiber is connected.
  • Automatic Power Control (APC): Maintains consistent optical output power to ensure signal quality .

Receiving vs Transmitting Ports

Optical modules also have a receiving port, connected to the ROSA (Receiver Optical Sub-Assembly), which converts incoming optical signals back into electrical signals . The transmitting port is always the side where light exits the module, while the receiving port is where light enters.

Practical Identification

On most optical transceivers, the transmitting port is labeled as "TX" and the receiving port as "RX" on the module housing. When connecting fiber optic cables, ensure the TX port of one module aligns with the RX port of the other device to establish proper communication .
